Vienna Airport: A Strategic Hub for Austrian Airlines and Global Travel
Vienna Airport is the international airport of Vienna, capital of Austria. It lies in Schwechat, 18 km (11 mi) southeast of central Vienna and 57 kilometres (35 mi) west of Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. Its formal name within the Austrian Aeronautical Information Publication is Wien-Schwechat Airport. It is the country’s biggest airport and the main hub for Austrian Airlines and a base for low-cost carriers Wizz Air and Ryanair. The airport has the capacity to handle wide-body jets up to the Airbus A380. The airport has a comprehensive network of European points and long-haul flights to Asia, North America and Africa.
History and Evolution of Vienna International Airport
Initially constructed as a military airport in 1938, Vienna International Airport served as the Heinkel-Süd aircraft factory during World War II. Post-war, the British occupied it, renaming it RAF Schwechat. In 1954, Wien-Aspern Airport was replaced by it as Austria’s primary airport.
The airport grew in the decades that followed, with a second runway being opened in 1972 and connectivity to the national motorway established in 1982. Of particular note are the opening of Terminal 1 in 1992, Pier West in 1996, and the control tower in 2006. The VIP and general aviation terminal was also opened that year.
The main expansion proposal came in 1998, resulting in the building of Terminal 3 (Skylink), which was opened in 2012 after lengthy delays and cost overruns. The terminal added a further 30 million passengers annually to capacity. Later refits upgraded Terminals 1 and 2, as well as Concourses B and D. Vienna International Airport remains Austria’s main aviation center today.
The airport consists of four terminal buildings called Terminal 1, 2 and 3 which are constructed directly against one another as well as the other Terminal 1A opposite Terminal 1. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are linked to the five concourses. The central arrivals hall for all terminal areas is in Terminal 3. Make the most of the time before your departure or during a transfer and enjoy the comfortable SKY Lounge in Terminal 3 or the exclusive VIENNA Lounge in Terminal 1 at Vienna Airport.
Ground transportation
Train
The Vienna S-Bahn route S7 is a local service to the city centre in about 25 minutes. The pricier City Airport Train links the airport to Wien Mitte railway station, near the city centre, in 16 minutes.
In addition, the underground station of the airport has been enlarged to serve long-distance trains. From December 2014, the first trains from Vienna’s new main station, German ICE services, end at the airport. From December 2015, ÖBB Railjet services run to the airport as well. Long-distance train travel between the airport and the main station takes around 15 minutes.
Car
The airport is located immediately next to motorway A4 connecting central Vienna to Budapest. It also has an exit of its own called Flughafen Wien-Schwechat. Bratislava is accessible via motorway A6 branching off the A4 in the east. Taxis and car-hire terminals are present at the airport. There are also a number of taxi companies serving at the airport.
Bus
There are buses from the airport to different locations in Vienna and also to other cities such as Bratislava, Budapest and Brno.
