Exploring the cafe culture in Graz: A blend of tradition and modernity
As Austria’s second-largest city, an initial visit from us was bound to gradually find its way into the slowly unfolding slow-coffee-scene. While we have more often ventured into the specialist coffee shop serving flat whites and filtered coffees, it was here that we came home to a different approach.
Graz’s cafe culture is a wonderful mix of old-school charm and modern coffee trends. Although we did seek some modernity in the city’s coffee shops, we could not resist the traditional cafes of this city. Such a mixture of past and present added an element to our experience that no one else could obtain.
Our Favorite Cafes and Coffee Shops in Graz
While Graz does possess its share of specialty coffee bars, the cities’ traditional cafés have character. Their historical appeal and incredible Austrian pastries more than justify what they perhaps lack in a coffee quality angle-at least for coffee snobs like myself.
No matter where you fall on the coffee spectrum, it’s well worth spending some time at both old and new cafes in Graz. Who knows? Lingering over a coffee and pastry in one of these cafes might just become the highlight of your visit. It certainly was for us.
Here are some of our favorite cafes and coffee shops in Graz:
- Beanery Specialty Coffee is located at Zinzendorfgasse 20, 8010 Graz, Austria.
- Tribeka has multiple Graz locations. We visited the cafe located at Technikerstraße 13, 8010 Graz, Austria.
- Greenhouse is located at Herrengasse 7, 8010 Graz, Austria.
- Buna is located at Joanneumring 16, 8010 Graz, Austria.
- Ducks Coffee Shop is located at Raubergasse 14, 8010 Graz, Austria.
Anyway, whether sipping a latte in a really modern coffee shop or enjoying Austrian pastry in historic cafes, one can be very sure that café culture in Graz will win a place in any heart.
