“Vienna City Hall in Autumn: A Breathtaking Symphony of Color”

The Mayor of Vienna’s official residence is one of the most stately and imposing buildings on the Ringstrasse. The Rathausplatz in front is a favorite venue for events – and there is also much to be seen inside.

Vienna City Hall, constructed between 1872 and 1883 by Friedrich von Schmidt, is the most significant secular neo-Gothic building in Vienna. The official residence of the mayor and the venue for meetings of the state government and the municipal council is a magnificent building: Approximately 30 million bricks and over 40,000 cubic meters of natural stone were utilized in its construction. The colonnaded courtyard of the City Hall covers an area of 2,804 m², which is one of the largest courtyards in Europe. The Festsaal (Ballroom) measures 71 meters long, 20 meters wide and 18.5 meters high. If the fire department would allow it, 1,500 couples would be able to dance the waltz here simultaneously. The tower’s height is only slightly less than 98 meters, added to which is the so-called “Iron Rathausmann”, who stands another six meters including the standard and has become a symbol of Vienna. His shoe size is gigantic: 63.
